Every September, centers like Westwind Recovery®® celebrate recovery successes and find creative ways to share information about addiction treatment and relapse prevention. Recovery is not easy. It takes effort, but it’s worth it. National Recovery Month serves as a reminder of the benefits of living a clean and sober life. This year, find ways to celebrate others’ successes in recovery and support those working through challenges on their road to sustainable sobriety. Our addiction treatment programs offer the targeted support that individuals struggling with drug or alcohol addiction need.
What Is So Special About September?
September is National Recovery Month, a nationwide observance that celebrates the way recovery can change lives. Sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), thousands of programs share success stories and increase awareness about addiction recovery during National Recovery Month.
By promoting the gains made in treatment and recovery practices, professionals in substance abuse treatment show people throughout the country that recovery is possible and that it can transform a person’s life.
The first National Recovery Month was in 1989, and they called it “Treatment Works! Month.” Now, 32 years later, dedicated service providers like those at Westwind Recovery®® promote evidence-based treatment practices as the best hope for if you need addiction services. At the same time, they raise awareness about the gains made by those who are in recovery and about substance use disorders in general.
The theme for the 2021 National Recovery Month is “Recovery is For Everyone: Every Person, Every Family, Every Community.” Why is this year’s theme so important? As the world continues to grapple with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s vital for communities to be pillars of support. Spending time reflecting on the impact addiction has had and how individuals, families, and communities can support each other in recovery can be an invaluable practice. As 2021’s National Recovery Month gets underway, look into ways to cheer on those in recovery and encourage those struggling with addiction to get the help they need.
How Can You Join National Recovery Month?
National Recovery Month is a celebration, so what can you do? The best answer is to get involved. Of the estimated 20.7 million people who have a substance use disorder, only a fraction will receive the treatment they need. Participating in National Recovery Month is a chance for you to create change.
Consider some ways you can get involved this year, such as:
- Plan a virtual celebration event or an outdoor walk with social distancing guidelines to raise awareness. Use this event as a forum to highlight both community and national recovery issues.
- Talk about your recovery or ask someone you love to discuss theirs on social media. You may even be able to set up virtual public service announcements.
- Set up a discussion group for those in recovery to network and communicate. Technology makes this very easy these days. You can create a Facebook group, do a Twitter or Facebook chat, or set up a Google Hangout.
- Start a blog to talk about addiction recovery.
- Organize a local campaign to raise awareness.
Every little bit helps get the word out about the importance of treatment and recovery.
