TMS therapy program and trauma therapy program room of outpatient drug rehab center

Outpatient treatment for substance abuse is an ideal option if you have the drive to get and stay sober but can’t take leave from work, disrupt school attendance or step away from other responsibilities to stay at an inpatient drug rehab center.

Outpatient drug rehab centers are also paramount for clients leaving inpatient drug rehab centers in CA and needing to slowly, carefully, and strategically enter the “real world” in a new way where they are learning how to incorporate everyday activities and behaviors as a sober person.

Outpatient Drug Rehab Center

Different levels of outpatient drug rehab are available so that you can transition progressively from more frequent and intensive therapy to less as you show an ability to manage your recovery with less clinical support.

The outpatient drug rehab center in Los Angeles works the same way inpatient does, with the main difference being that inpatient treatment programs are 24/7 and often begin with a supervised detoxification period while outpatient programs meet for a set number of days per week and hours per day.

The main components of outpatient treatment at Westwind Recovery® include:

  • one-to-one counseling with an addiction professional
  • one-to-one appointments with a medical doctor and psychiatrist
  • group therapy
  • educational sessions

At Westwind Recovery®, both inpatient and outpatient rehab incorporate evidence-based treatment practices such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Medication-Assisted Therapies, and Twelve-Step Facilitation. Family involvement in the rehab process is another crucial factor to consider in weighing outpatient treatment options. Because addiction affects the entire family, programs that offer family therapy, education, support, and other resources are beneficial in helping family members work through the chaos they’ve experienced, set healthy boundaries, and rebuild relationships.

What Are the Benefits of Outpatient Rehab?

There are many benefits of why an individual would choose outpatient rehab over inpatient rehab. One of the main benefits of outpatient rehab includes the option for individuals to continue working while they work their way through treatment, including other benefits such as being less disruptive to daily life and reducing cost.

Maintaining Employment

Some rehab centers operate during off-hours or in the evenings so that patients can sustain employment while receiving treatment. Even though a leave of absence to attend a drug and alcohol rehab is generally protected by the FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act), some individuals might not want to leave work for various reasons. This means that you can’t be fired for seeking addiction treatment.

Furthermore, the FMLA protects individuals from being fired, but the time off is unpaid. Overall, this can pose problems for individuals that are considered the breadwinner in their home or if the person has someone else to take care of. When individuals are the sole caregiver for their children, they also might not want to attend inpatient rehab if their children don’t have a trusted individual to care for them on a full-time basis.

Family Focus

Since individuals in outpatient treatment usually have more family support than those in inpatient treatment settings, it can be favorable for them to maintain a rather close familial relationship while receiving treatment.

Family therapy can be thoroughly incorporated into outpatient rehab, offering assistance to the family and the patient. In family therapy, the entire family is assessed as a system as it works in the belief that a change in the system can bring about changes in other aspects.

One of the main purposes of family therapy is to find resources and strengths in the family and utilize them to develop ways to live a life substance-free. During this time, it’s an ideal opportunity to educate families further about their loved one’s addictions. Furthermore, it’s a timely opportunity to teach families the behavioral, psychological, and medical consequences of addiction.

Outpatient Detoxification

The overall process of detox is an uncomfortable experience, even for an individual with a mild addiction. When an individual detoxes at an outpatient facility, it’s considered safe and effective. Fortunately, the medical staff can provide medications to ease any unpleasant symptoms while also monitoring vitals.

During this ordeal, it might be beneficial for patients to maintain social and familial relationships instead of being isolated from supportive friends and family. The outpatient detox patients are less likely to return to the same clinic that they detoxed at for additional treatment. In addition, another benefit of outpatient rehab in Los Angeles is that detoxification care costs less money.

The Cost of Outpatient Rehab

Though the cost of outpatient rehab in Los Angeles varies greatly, generally outpatient rehab is less expensive than inpatient rehab. Insurance usually covers a large percentage of the cost of rehab, but for individuals paying out-of-pocket, financially, outpatient rehab in Los Angeles is a more suited option. As articulated, there are various factors to consider upon choosing treatment.

How Long is Outpatient Treatment?

The goal of outpatient drug rehab centers in Los Angeles is to stabilize your health and equip you with the knowledge, skills, and resources to help you reclaim your life from addiction and prevent relapse. Your pace through outpatient drug rehab won’t be identical to those around you. While there are typical milestones in healing from addiction, your treatment and recovery path is your own—based on your specific situation, challenges, and needs.

Regaining and maintaining your health means learning to manage your symptoms. First, within the structure and support of a treatment setting, and eventually in your home environment where you’re in charge of your sobriety. Westwind Recovery® is also very aware that finding work is especially important for those in recovery. For this reason, we offer career counseling services to all of our clients.

These services include practice-based techniques such as interviewing, and all our groups are facilitated by experienced clinicians who specialize in the dynamic of the group process and ensure that healing can begin and continue. These groups abolish plateaus in the treatment process and provide a space for healing and recovery with no limits. You’re welcome here.

The Three Types of Outpatient Treatment We Offer

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

PHP is the highest level of outpatient drug rehab center treatment that meets five days a week for up to six hours a day. Some people start drug rehab in day treatment, and others transition into this level of care after completing inpatient addiction treatment. This level of treatment focuses on continuing the coping and relapse prevention skills learned during inpatient care but also has a significant component on life skills, including career counseling, finance, and budgeting classes, and learning how to socialize as a sober person.

Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program (IOP)

Intensive outpatient programs, or IOPs, are typically offered at a variety of times to accommodate busy schedules. Day and evening options give participants a chance to continue with work, attend school, or take care of their responsibilities at home. At Westwind Recovery® treatment centers, our IOP schedule is for three hours, either from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM or 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

Outpatient (OP)

Clients attending an outpatient drug rehab center program with Westwind Recovery® will attend a group twice a week and have one therapy session per week. The purpose of the outpatient program is to give each client the freedom to be more involved in their own personal and professional lives. But they still have the continued support and assistance from the team of professionals focusing on their recovery as they gain more sober time.

Recovery Residencies

Maintaining a sober lifestyle isn’t easy. Between 40-and 60% of recovering addicts relapse during addiction treatment. But just because it’s difficult doesn’t mean it’s impossible.

Westwind Recovery®’s residence program is a middle ground between an actual rehab facility and a home-based, outpatient drug rehab center. It’s less intense than a typical rehab, but it’s still a substance-free environment that keeps you away from temptations. Recovery residency environments generally provide a clean living space for people to work toward recovery, but most do not contain actual treatment.

Instead, they help individuals reconnect with work or school, and work alongside an outpatient recovery program. Recovery residencies environments are ideal for people who are enrolled in treatment or attending a 12-step program. A sober home is a great place where they can live free of the influences that may make them inclined to relapse.

They also offer indirect support for those in recovery by connecting individuals with others who are going through the same thing as them. Recovery residencies environments are also another solution for people who aren’t ready to go home after inpatient rehab, or who no longer have a home to go to. It’s a more affordable option and provides individuals with a community of people who can support them in their quest to stay sober.

Recovery residencies are incredibly crucial to recovery because they protect residents from the things that can trigger a relapse. Stress, people, and places you associate with your addiction, negative emotions, and seeing the object of your addiction can easily set you on a downward spiral. Recovery residencies protect you from those things by keeping you away from them as you recover.

People who stay in a recovery residency:

  • Remain sober for longer
  • Stay sober more consistently
  • Relapse at a lower rate
  • Hold steady jobs
  • Stay out of legal issues

The Effectiveness of Outpatient Drug Rehab in Los Angeles

Research has shown that outpatient treatment for substance use is effective. However, an individual with an addiction needs to find the proper program for them. Overall, the specific needs of the patient, their personal history, personality, strengths, and weaknesses will be weighed.

For an outpatient drug rehab in Los Angeles to be effective, it must portray the following:

  • Support for managing co-occurring disorders (a mental health disorder and a substance addiction)
  • An approach that addresses the entire person, not just the addiction
  • Access to an integrative and caring team
  • A community that is focused on recovery
  • Access to experiential and evidence-based therapies
  • An approach that is rooted in addiction science

Outpatient Drug Rehab Insurance Coverage

Generally, outpatient drug rehab costs less than inpatient rehab. This is because individuals live at home and don’t need to pay for meals, a room, or 24/7 medical care. On average, outpatient programs might cost a few hundred dollars a day consequently inpatient treatment centers are closer to $1,000 per day.

The outpatient treatment centers do vary widely based on the following factors:

  • Different services offered
  • The length of treatment
  • If the individual has insurance

All the health insurance plans are offered by the open exchanges that are created by the Affordable Care Act, which covers intensive outpatient therapy. Generally, medicare typically covers pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, and educational sessions, as long as a medical doctor has referred the client to treatment. It’s important to contact the treatment center about insurance and plans beforehand.
