Meet Our Therapist Grace
Grace O’Connor is a Registered Associate Marriage and Family Therapist who specializes in providing care to members of the LGBTQ community who struggle with addiction. Her own experiences in recovery have given her a unique perspective, and she brings compassion and expertise to Westwind’s team.
Grace believes that adversity doesn’t build character but that it reveals it. She works hard to help each of her clients find healing. Transgender health and wellness are central to her work, and the community and support clients find at Westwind Recovery® are key to lasting positive changes.
As a transgender-identified person, Grace brings experience and perspective to her work with her clients. Many transgender individuals struggle with both discrimination from others and internalized transphobia. Grace builds bonds of trust and security with her clients, and it’s in the safety of this support that her clients come to embrace their authentic selves.
Some of the addiction treatment therapies and approaches to treatment that Grace incorporates into therapy sessions include:
- Family systems theory
- Grief work
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy
- Mindfulness and meditation
- Somatic therapy
- Relational therapy
- 12 step therapy

How Westwind Recovery® Supports Our Transgender Clients
We believe that supportive, affirmative care can make a difference in our clients’ lives. Each of our treatment programs and our sober living houses is available to our LGBTQ clients, and we work to understand the specific needs and concerns of everyone in our care.
Some of the challenges and issues that our transgender clients may face include:
- Dual diagnosis of mental health and substance use disorders
- Conflict with family members
- Discrimination and oppression
- Internalized transphobia
- Confusion around sexual orientation or gender identity
- Past sexual, physical, or emotional trauma
Our trauma-informed approach to treatment helps our clients feel safe and supported as they build healthy coping skills and work through the underlying causes of addiction.
Members of the LGBTQ community have been found to struggle with addiction and mental health issues at a higher rate than the general population, which could be a result of past traumatic experiences such as victimization at school or conflict with family members. We want to remove any obstacles to treatment in order to help every individual heal. We create personalized treatment plans for every individual in our care. If you or a loved one is struggling, reach out to our team today.
