If you have Blue Shield of California it is not the same as Anthem. In many states, Blue Cross and Blue Sheild are the same carrier, and in California, they operate together in large group and government levels.
What Types of Addiction Treatment Does Anthem Blue Cross Cover?
Anthem covers almost all types of addiction treatment. The way they determine who will receive coverage of which types of services depends on the person’s medical history and recommendations from treatment professionals. Of course, they will also only cover services that your insurance plan specifies it can cover. This includes the following:
Detox
Detoxification, or detox for short, is a process where the substance of abuse is removed from an individual’s body in order to decrease withdrawal symptoms. Medical detox is often used in order to eliminate or minimize withdrawal symptoms. This process is supervised by medical professionals 24/7. Detox is the first step in addiction treatment and Anthem typically covers inpatient medical detox.
Inpatient Care
Inpatient care involves residential treatment and 24-hour supervision with round-the-clock access to medical personnel and counselors. This type of addiction treatment helps individuals receive the highest level of care and complete treatment in a safe environment. Individuals that qualify for residential treatment will need to be recommended by treatment professionals as this is a more intensive form of substance abuse treatment.
Partial Hospitalization Programs
Partial hospitalization programs (PHPs) are the highest level of outpatient care available. They provide a step-down from inpatient or residential care and typically include five to seven hours of treatment a day, five days a week.
Intensive Outpatient Programs
Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) provide about three to four hours of treatment a day for three to five days a week, depending on your individual needs. This is usually recommended after completing PHP or residential treatment.
Outpatient Care
Outpatient services generally focus on group meetings, therapy sessions, counseling, and medication management. This type of care requires less time than IOPs and PHPs, typically lasting two to eight hours per week. It is generally used for those who do not need the more intensive residential or PHP treatments. Anthem Blue Cross will cover outpatient treatment for those that qualify. Typically it depends on the individual’s treatment needs and whatever is recommended by the facility.
Dual Diagnosis Treatment
Dual diagnosis treatment helps individuals with substance abuse and mental health issues get better together. This type of care addresses both aspects of the disorder, rather than tackling them separately. It can be provided in either an inpatient or outpatient setting, depending on your individual needs.
Mental Health Services
Anthem Blue Cross covers mental health services such as counseling, psychotherapy, medication management, and psychiatry. It also covers inpatient or outpatient treatment for those with severe mental illnesses. Your treatment provider will help you determine which form of care will be best for your mental health condition.
Aftercare Services
Anthem BCBS can cover aftercare services such as one-on-one counseling and group therapy. It also covers case management services, which help individuals develop treatment plans and connect them to community resources. Medication-Assisted Treatment
